Our goal at Mindful Host is to be planet-friendly with a light environmental footprint. We started Mindful Host because nobody was talking about party waste.
We want to leave a better world for the next generation and so we have a guiding set of principles for every product we create. We do this because we believe that celebrations can and should encourage sustainable thinking. We know that sustainability is an ever-moving target so we are always improving our process.
Our Sustainability Criteria:
1. Product Materials:
At least 90% of our products are made from recycled or recyclable substrates. We prioritize renewable materials such as bamboo over plastic. We do not laminate our paper with plastic as this makes it harder to recycle. Our products are printed with vegetable (soy) based inks.
2. Product Life:
We know most parties are one-off events so we design our products to be fully recyclable. This is only a start as our long term vision is to create versatile, multi-use party products.
We care how and where our products are made and so we seek to work with partners who are also committed to being sustainable and planet-friendly.
Our product packaging is designed to optimize space, thereby decreasing the energy required for transport. Packaging is minimized to avoid unnecessary waste and uses recycled materials.
Our Sustainability in Action:
We work with paper mills that recycle old newspapers and supermarket. Recycling paper helps conserve natural resources, reduce greenhouse emissions and keep landfill free for waste that can’t be recycled. Paper can be recycled up to 7 times and making products from recycled paper gives mills an incentive to recycle rather than cut down new trees.
Our packaging is made from recycled card with a clear PET cover made from recycled plastic bottles. We thought hard about the cover but recognise that huge volumes of plastic waste already exists so it is important to find ways to recycle them into things we make. Otherwise, they end up as micro-plastics in oceans and show up in our food.
Up until the 20th century, dice were handmade from wood. Then plastic came along and billions of plastic dice have since been made. Our dicee are made by furniture makers from bamboo cutoffs that are too small to be used for anything else. Bamboo is a great natural material – it grows faster than trees, uses less water, produces 35 x more oxygen.
One of the biggest environmental problem is over consumption. Companies make millions of products then try to sell them cheaply or burn off excess stock. We have an smart manufacturing process that allows us to only make products when needed by our customers and our wholesalers. This means less waste of energy, water and natural resources.
